BMEX Network Celebrates 3rd Birthday
BMEX is a metropolitan area network utilising Ethernet fibre-optic LAN Extension services to connect media businesses within the Bristol area and offer high bandwidth internet access. The hub is managed by Netsight and is located at their city centre colocation facility.
Networked media services - High speed data transfer - High bandwidth internet access
Servicing one of the most significant media industries outside London, BMEX offers a tool for effective collaboration, offering producers, service providers and others a simple, fast, reliable and cost effective way to share data:
"We used the BMEX extensively throughout the production of Comic Relief, via the Films@59 approvals website. This facility saved time and money that would have been spent on travelling between the BBC in Bristol and the London offices of Comic Relief. It gave the teams the facility to view the latest cut of a film within minutes of getting it finished." Kate Broome, Series Producer, BBC
In 1999, Bristol University Computer Science led Bristol Creative Technology Network, an R&D consortium, in an experiment with high bandwidth connectivity for the media sector. This provided a dark fibre MAN offering 155MB connections to consortia members. Following the conclusion of this three year research project, Bristol University, Watershed Media Centre, Hewlett-Packard Labs, Films at 59 Ltd, Granada, Netsight Internet Solutions and NESTA FutureLab became founding partners in a commercial successor to BCTN, the Broadband Media Exchange.
"Being part of Broadband Media Exchange has catapulted Watershed into the digital revolution. The connectivity, both digital and organisational, has been catalytic in placing Watershed at the forefront of digital media development. It was as if we moved overnight from learning to walk to riding on Concorde - not only could we communicate very fast but we could do it with lots of other like minded people who were moving at a similar pace. BMEX has transformed the way Watershed does business, building a range of relationships which connect up talent and expertise, projecting Bristol to the world." Dick Penny, Managing Director, Watershed Media Centre
In an increasingly digital industry, BMEX has the capacity to support a huge range of services: from Voice over IP and video conferencing to utility provision, training, software and off-site back-up.
"In the digital media industry the only way to stay competitive is to use the emergent technologies before others adopt them. Its the pioneers, early adopters and risk-takers that succeed, and because of whats here in Bristol we're in a strong position to become a leader on the world stage." John Manley, HP Labs
Bi-directional, high speed, secure and reliable - BMEX is a unique and ground breaking network. With obvious comparisons to Londons Sohonet, BMEX is the only media network you can link into from a normal internet connection and offers a combination of services that cannot be sourced elsewhere.
