Oxford Ceramics is a UK based gallery representing and selling the work of a number of internationally reknowned ceramic artists.

Challenge

The requirement was for two websites: an Exhibition site to promote and archive exhibition events and a Gallery site to act as an online showcase of artists and their work, with an integrated ecommerce solution to enable  the sale of artworks online.

Both sites would be required to display artist information and details of their work, drawing data from a single source but displaying it in two very different ways. In order to encourage online sales, artworks in stock would need to be selectable for purchase at any point of the user journey through the site, with minimal interruption to user experience.

There was also a requirement to refresh the existing Oxford Ceramics branding, to establish it as a strong online brand and develop brand guidelines to extend the brand further offline.

Result

In order not to detract from the works on show the visual aesthetic is stylistically minimal, with a focus on strong typography and a well proportioned, tightly controlled grid layout.

A choice of Helvetica for the main font keeps the site clean and contemporary, whilst touches of Georgia add personality and warmth, preventing the look from being too corporate.

In addition to providing a more user friendly online shopping experience, the new version of the site contains profiles of each individual artist together with a comprehensive archive of their work, all organised in a tight grid layout.

Whilst browsing an artists work in any area of the site, visitors can click an artwork to view details of the item, in a window overlaid within the browser, enabling them to add the article to their shopping basket without leaving the section of the site they are currently viewing, thus providing a more seamless user experience.

Indication of items in the shopping basket are shown in a marker which remains present on both the gallery and exhibition sites so users can switch between sites without losing track of their purchased items.
