Avaya / Ubiquity Developer Network udn.devconnectprogram.com

Avaya is a global leader in communication systems, applications, and services. As a key innovator in the enterprise telephony market, Avaya is leading the transition to IP telephony and Intelligent Communications, recording revenues well in excess of $5 Billion for FY2006.

In 2007 Avaya bought UK developer Ubiquity Software. Ubiquity's core product is Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) software, which Avaya uses to support network operators in the migration to all-IP communications.

Ubiquity Developer Network is the leading real-time developer portal for the Avaya SIP Application Server. UDN assists developers in creating intelligent communications applications through evaluation software, training materials, developer tools and technical support materials.

During the development of the UDN, Netsight consultants provided the following:

  • Mentoring for in-house developers
  • Integration of Plone with in-house Active Directory server
  • Integration of Plone with Salesforce.com CRM system
  • Integration with in-house Java-based license key system

The UDN allows customers and users of Ubiquity's software to access a community network with articles, patches, code samples and help on using the software. Most of the site is accessible by the general public, but some areas are restricted to strategic partners or customers with premium support contracts. Users can apply for accounts on the site, which adds their information to Ubiquity's Salesforce.com CRM system as a lead. Account Managers at Ubiquity can then contact the user to ascertain the appropriate level of access and create an account on the Plone-based UDN site with a single click directly within Salesforce. All customer contact information and account info is shared between the Plone and Salesforce systems.

The Ubiquity Download Centre provides a means for users to download large software releases, and hence has to scale to large numbers of peak users, yet still provide fine grained access control over the files for download. This was achieved using the Tramline add-on to Plone which allows downloads to be handled directly by the web server (Apache) rather than the CMS (Plone).

Netsight also produced a Plone 'skin' for the Ubiquity Corporate Site, working from design concepts provided by the company's brand consultancy.

The UDN project received the following comments:

"Outstanding - nice design and interface options, and I particularly like the Live Search."
